Diabetes Mellitus Type
Diabetes mellitus is classified into three categories: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Of the three types of diabetes, diabetes 2 is the most common. Diabetes 2 begins when your pancreas becomes burdened with a continual stimulation of insulin due to a prolonged history of glucose spikes in the bloodstream. Eventually, the beta cells within the pancreas become exhausted and do not produce enough insulin, or the insulin that is produced is simply not effective.
The way in which the body breaks down sugars for energy becomes impaired. Simply put, the body is simply unable to dispose of the sugar in the bloodstream and normalize the glucose levels. Diabetes mellitus is determined by taking the hemoglobin A1c test which measures sugar levels in the blood.
Diabetes 2 is associated with obesity, so it is possible for those with Type 2 to avoid taking drugs by making changes to their diet and adding an exercise regimen. Diabetes 2 is caused by a sedentary lifestyle and overeating, particularly of refined carbohydrates and sugar. While diabetes is well on its way to becoming an epidemic, research has proven that the best prescription of controlling diabetes 2 is a vegetarian diet and proper exercise.
The first consequence of suffering from Type 2 diabetes mellitus is that the person's blood sugar count rises so much that it causes complications unless treated in time. It is a big factor in accelerating the hardening of the arteries, increasing the possibility of strokes and coronary heart disease. An added consequence of Diabetes 2 is the damage caused to peripheral vessels resulting in poor circulation.
The average age of children diagnosed with diabetes 2 is now 13 years of age, and Metformin is the most popular drug prescribed. Unfortunately, if Diabetes 2 is not controlled it can develop into Diabetes 1 and become a more serious illness. Diabetes 2 is now the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
By diligently following a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise Diabetes 2 can be tightly controlled. Following up with regular blood tests allows you to confirm that your blood sugar count is within healthy diabetic range and that your diet and exercise are indeed effective.
